BSIS Exposed Firearms Permit

Day 1: Classroom

  • Procedures following a shooting

Day 2: Range

  • Practice safely handling and firing weapons
  • BSIS approved range qualification course

To secure a spot it is important that you call the office to schedule an appointment for class and range time.

In accordance with the standards provided by the BSIS, students must qualify with the minimum score of 80% on course of fire prescribed by the Bureau and pass with minimum score of 85% or more on the Bureau written exam. Passing the written exam is only required at time of initial firearm application and the renewal of firearm permit.

Please note: You must bring proof of U.S. citizenship or legal residency in the United States in order to shoot. ONLY original documents. Photocopies are not accepted. The ONLY documents that are accepted by the BSIS are:

  • Birth Certificate (hospital birth certificates are not accepted. Must have official seal & document number)
  • U.S. Passport Book or Passport cards
  • DD-214 or Valid Military ID
  • Green Card
  • INS paperwork

After successful course completion the provided forms must be sent to the State of California to attain your permit.
